Integrating GetStream with Laravel using stream-laravel for Real Time Notifications

Hello,

After a long time I am publishing a blog post. I am sorry to all my readers for not publishing blog for longer time. In this blog I am going to explain how you can have real time notifications in your laravel application using GetStream.io.

I will not go in installation details as it's very well documented on their Github page. You can refer it here.

GetStream/steam-laravel

After you have installed it and configured service provider. First thing you have to do is create table for notifications. For that create migration add following code to it.

Schema::create('notifications', function (Blueprint $table) {
$table->increments('id');
$table->integer('user_id')->index();
$table->string('name');
$table->string('message');
$table->string('link');
$table->timestamps();
});

Now create a model with name Notifications and add following code to it.

namespace App\Http\Models;

use App\User;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Model;

class Notifications extends Model
{
    //
    use \GetStream\StreamLaravel\Eloquent\ActivityTrait;
    /**
     * The attributes that are mass assignable.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $table = 'notifications';

    protected $fillable = ['name', 'message','link'];

    /**
     * The attributes that should be cast to native types.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $casts = [
        'user_id' => 'int',
    ];
    /**
     * Get the user that owns the task.
     */
    public function user()
    {
        return $this->belongsTo(User::class);
    }
    /**
     * Stream: Add extra activity data - task name, and user's display name:
     */
    public function activityExtraData()
    {
        return array('name'=>$this->name, 'message' => $this->message, 'link'=> $this->link);
    }
   /**
    * Stream: Change activity verb to 'created':
    */
    public function activityVerb()
    {
        return 'created';
    }

}

Now open your user model and add following code to it.

public function notifications()
    {
        return $this->hasMany(Notifications::class);
    }

So now we have notifications table setup and it's linked to user with hasMany relationship. Now next we will show how you can create notification.

$userObject->notifications()->create([
'name' => "NOTIFICATION_NAME",
'message' => 'NOTIFICATION_MESSAGE',
'link' => 'NOTIFICATION_LINK'
]);

Here userObject is the object of user for whom you want to create notification. Now next we will show how to get all the notifications and show it user. For this we are going to use AngularJs.

We are using client side library of GetStream.io you can download it from following link.

For this first of all we have to get token and that can be generated only from server side code. So create an API and call it from AngularJs controller. Here is the API code.

public function getStreamToken(){
$feed = \FeedManager::getUserFeed(Auth::user()->id);
$token = $feed->getToken();

return Response::json(array("success"=>true,"token"=>$token,"user_id"=>Auth::user()->id));
}

Now as soon as we get token, next you have to connect to client and get user feeds and register for push notifications. Here is the code for the same.

var client = stream.connect('YOUR_API_KEY', null, 'YOUR_APP_ID');
$scope.user = client.feed('user', $scope.user_id, $scope.token);

function successCallback() {
console.log('now listening to changes in realtime');
}

function failCallback(data) {
console.log(data);
}

$scope.user.subscribe($scope.gotNotification).then(successCallback, failCallback);

$scope.user.get({limit:10, offset:$scope.offset}, $scope.gotUserActivities);

So above code will register you for the push notification and will get all your notifications. Now you have to display it using HTML and CSS as per your wish.

For showing new notification, you can use below code in gotNotification function.

$.bootstrapGrowl(data.new[0].name + ' ' + data.new[0].message, { type: 'success' });

It will show nice pop up on screen.

Send FireBase Push notifications from PHP Application

Hello,

Recently in one of my project we have mobile applications with PHP web services. In this we have a requirement to send Firebase Push notifications from PHP to mobile app. Here in this blog I am going to explain how to do this.

First all login to your Firebase console and get the Web Api key. Go to https://console.firebase.google.com/ and login with your user name and password.

Select your project

Click on gear icons on left and select project settings and above screen will be displayed. Here Web Api Key is the key which you need. copy it. Now let see code one by one.

$url = 'https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send';

This is the URL we will use to send push notification.

Now lets build the payload.

$fields = array (
'to' => 'REGISTRATION_KEY',
"notification" => array(
"title"=> "Welcome To App",
"body"=> "App Description"
),
"data"=>array(
"key_1"=>"value_1",
                        "key_2"=>"value_2"
)
);

Here to is the filed which contains registration id for the device. This is the id which you get when you register device for push notification.

notification contains title and text to be displayed in notification area. This is a standard format and should not be changed.

data contains all the user defined data you want to send with notification, you can add any number of key value pairs here.

If you don't want to pass any data, remove the data field from payload. So now payload is read now lets encode it to send.

$fields = json_encode ( $fields );

Now send headers with API key.

$headers = array (
'Authorization: key=' . "YOUR_WEB_API_KEY",
'Content-Type: application/json'
);

Now we will use PHP cURL to send HTTP request.

$ch = curl_init ();
curl_setopt ( $ch, CURLOPT_URL, $url );
curl_setopt ( $ch, CURLOPT_POST, true );
curl_setopt ( $ch, CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER, $headers );
curl_setopt ( $ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true );
curl_setopt ( $ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $fields );

$result = curl_exec ( $ch );
echo $result;
curl_close ( $ch );

That's it and Push notification is sent to particular device.

Push Google Cloud Message (GCM) from PHP Web Application

In this blog I am going to explain how to push a Google Cloud Message (GCM) from PHP web application.

First of all you will need API key from your Google API account. Go to Google API console and add GCM t your API project and generate a key for Android.  This key you have to add in your PHP script.

Now add following function to your PHP script.

public function send_notification($registatoin_ids, $message) {

        // Set POST variables
        $url = 'https://android.googleapis.com/gcm/send';
        $apiKey = 'your_api_key';

        $fields = array(
            'registration_ids' => $registatoin_ids,
            'data' => $message,
        );

        $headers = array(
            'Authorization: key=' . $apiKey,
            'Content-Type: application/json'
        );
        // Open connection
        $ch = curl_init();

        // Set the url, number of POST vars, POST data
        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $url);

        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, true);
        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER, $headers);
        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true);

        // Disabling SSL Certificate support temporarly
        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, false);

        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, json_encode($fields));

        // Execute post
        $result = curl_exec($ch);
        if ($result === FALSE) {
            die('Curl failed: ' . curl_error($ch));
        }

        // Close connection
        curl_close($ch);
        return $result;
    }

As you can see above function takes registration id and message as param and use curl to send push message to particular device. Registration is is unique per device for all the android phones.

Send Apple Push Notifications (APN) from PHP Web Application

Hello,

In this blog I am going to explain how to configure your PHP server to send Apple Push Notifications (APN). Please note you will need a valid apple developer account for this.

First of all you will need a PEM file on your server. Following are the steps to create PEM file. Log into apple member center with your developer account credentials.

https://developer.apple.com/membercenter/index.action

Go to Certificates, Identifies & Profiles

Select iOS Apps - > Certificates

We will see how to create both development and production PEM file. Click on + sign on top right corner to add new certificate. It will show you list of certificate types.

Choose from development if you want development certificate or choose from production if you want production certificate. Click on Next and it will ask you to select your application in next step.

Select your desired application and click on next. Now you have to upload certificate signing request. Following are steps to generate certificate signing request

  • Open Keychain Access on your Mac (located in Applications/Utilities).
  • Open Preferences and click Certificates. Make sure both Online Certificate Status Protocol and Certificate Revocation List are set to Off.
  • Choose Keychain Access > Certificate Assistant > Request a Certificate From a Certificate Authority.
  • Note: If you have a private key selected when you do this, the CSR won’t be accepted. Make sure no private key is selected. Enter your user email address and common name. Use the same address and name as you used to register in the iOS Developer Program. No CA Email Address is required.
  • Select the options “Saved to disk” and “Let me specify key pair information” and click Continue.
  • Specify a filename and click Save.

Upload CSR in the following screen and click on continue.

In the next step click on generate and it will generate your certificate. Download certificate to your local machine and double click on it and it will be added to key chain access and it will open and should show you following screen.

As you can see above development certificates are added as Apple Development iOS Push Services and Production certificate are added as Apple Push Services. Now click on left arrow and expand it. You will see name of certificate signing authority there. Select both name and certificate and double tap on it it will show you following menu.

Click on export two items and save .p12 file.

Now we will convert .p12 file to .pem file using OpenSSL. Open your terminal and run following command.

openssl pkcs12 -in Certificates.p12 -out Certificates.pem -nodes -clcerts

That's it your pem file is ready. Upload it your server and add following functions to send APNs for production and development respectively in your PHP.

public function sendAPNProduction($deviceToken, $msg, $message){

        $payload['aps'] = array('alert' => $msg, 'badge' => 1, 'sound' => 'default');
        $payload['messages'] = $message;
        $payload = json_encode($payload);

        $apnsCert = 'Certicates.pem';

        $streamContext = stream_context_create();
        stream_context_set_option($streamContext, 'ssl', 'local_cert', $apnsCert);

        $apns = stream_socket_client('ssl://gateway.push.apple.com:2195', $error, $errorString, 2, STREAM_CLIENT_CONNECT, $streamContext);

        $apnsMessage = chr(0) . chr(0) . chr(32) . pack('H*', str_replace(' ', '', $deviceToken)) . chr(0) . chr(strlen($payload)) . $payload;
        fwrite($apns, $apnsMessage);

        //socket_close($apns); seems to be wrong here ...
        fclose($apns);

}

public function sendAPNDevelopment($deviceToken, $msg, $message){

        $payload['aps'] = array('alert' => $msg, 'badge' => 1, 'sound' => 'default');
        $payload['messages'] = $message;
        $payload = json_encode($payload);

        $apnsCert = 'Certicates.pem';

        $streamContext = stream_context_create();
        stream_context_set_option($streamContext, 'ssl', 'local_cert', $apnsCert);

        $apns = stream_socket_client('ssl://gateway.sandbox.push.apple.com:2195', $error, $errorString, 2, STREAM_CLIENT_CONNECT, $streamContext);

        $apnsMessage = chr(0) . chr(0) . chr(32) . pack('H*', str_replace(' ', '', $deviceToken)) . chr(0) . chr(strlen($payload)) . $payload;
        fwrite($apns, $apnsMessage);

        //socket_close($apns); seems to be wrong here ...
        fclose($apns);

}

That's it and now your PHP web app is ready to send Apple Push Notifications (APNs). I hope this helps you.

Get device token for apple push notifications in sencha touch and phone gap

Hello,

Recently I was working on Apple push notifications with sencha touch and phonegap project. Requirement was to get device token in JavaScript file so that it can be sent to server for getting push notifications. For that first thing we need to do is register device to get Push notifications.

Please make sure that you have real apple device like iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to test this. This will not work in Simulator.

To register device for push notifications add following in your AppDelegate.m file.  Find method

- (BOOL) application:(UIApplication*)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary*)launchOptions

Also add following line to define token variable.

@synthesize token;

and add following code at end of the method.

NSLog(@"Registering for push notifications...");
    [[UIApplication sharedApplication]
     registerForRemoteNotificationTypes:
     (UIRemoteNotificationTypeAlert |
      UIRemoteNotificationTypeBadge |
      UIRemoteNotificationTypeSound)];

This will register device for getting push notifications. Please make sure that you have added provisioning profile which configured with non wild card app id and app is configured to receive  push notifications in your development portal. Also you need valid developer certificate.

After that you need to add following methods at end of the file.

- (void)application:(UIApplication *)app didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken:(NSData *)deviceToken {

    self.token = [[[[deviceToken description]
                    stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString: @"<" withString: @""]
                   stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString: @">" withString: @""]
                  stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString: @" " withString: @""];

    NSLog(@"My token is: %@", self.token);
}

- (void)application:(UIApplication *)app didFailToRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithError:(NSError *)err {

    NSString *str = [NSString stringWithFormat: @"Error: %@", err];
    NSLog(str);

}

- (void)application:(UIApplication *)application didReceiveRemoteNotification:(NSDictionary *)userInfo {

    for (id key in userInfo) {
        NSLog(@"key: %@, value: %@", key, [userInfo objectForKey:key]);
    }

}

This will get device token and store it to token. Now to send this token to JavaScript we will create a phonegap plugin. Please make sure that this code will work with Phonegap version 1.5.0. They named this version as Cardova.

First create folder inside plugins folder of your project folder and name it as PushToken and add two files to it PushToken.m and PushToken.h

Open PushToken.h file and add following code to it.

#import <Foundation/Foundation.h>
#import <Cordova/CDVPlugin.h>

@interface PushToken : CDVPlugin{

    NSString* callbackID;
}

@property (nonatomic, copy) NSString* callbackID;

- (void) getToken:(NSMutableArray*)arguments withDict:(NSMutableDictionary*)options;

@end

Now open PushToken.m file and add following code to it.

#import "PushToken.h"
#import "AppDelegate.h"

@implementation PushToken

@synthesize callbackID;

-(void)getToken:(NSMutableArray*)arguments withDict:(NSMutableDictionary*)options  {
    self.callbackID = [arguments pop];

    NSString *token = ((AppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]).token;

    CDVPluginResult* pluginResult = [CDVPluginResult resultWithStatus:CDVCommandStatus_OK messageAsString:[token stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]];

    if(token.length != 0)
    {
        [self writeJavascript: [pluginResult toSuccessCallbackString:self.callbackID]];
    }else {
        [self writeJavascript: [pluginResult toErrorCallbackString:self.callbackID]];
    }
}

@end

Now we have to map this plugin. For that open Cordova.plist file and following key value pair to it.

PushToken : PushToken

After that open AppDelegate.h file and add following line to it.

@property (retain, nonatomic) NSString* token;

That's it of phonegap side now we have to create JavaScript file form where we will execute this plugin code. Create JavaScript file with name PushToken.js and add it to www folder. Add following code to it.

var PushToken = {
    getToken: function(types, success, fail) {
        return Cordova.exec(success, fail, "PushToken", "getToken", types);
    }
};

Add link of this JavaScript file to your index.html page after phonegap JavaScript file. To get device token wherever you want use following code.

PushToken.getToken(
                     ["getToken"] ,
                     function(token) {
                              global.token = token;
                     },
                     function(error) {
                              console.log("Error : \r\n"+error);
                     }
          );

That's it and you have your device token.
